(AP) — Nevada Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick says it's too early to say whether a huge package of tax breaks and incentives needed to land Tesla Motors Inc.'s lithium battery factory will have smooth sailing at a special legislative session next week. The North Las Vegas Democrat said yesterday that she and her colleagues need to scrutinize details of the legislation before voting on the incentives that could total $1.3 billion in costs over 20 years. The deal has prompted concerns from both conservative and liberal groups.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Company and federal officials have marked the start of construction on a $1 billion solar power generating station in the desert 50 miles south of Las Vegas. Executives with Arizona-based First Solar Inc. and Florida-based NextEra Energy Resources joined federal Bureau of Land Management chief Neil Kornze at a ceremony Wednesday at the site of the 250-megawatt project, dubbed Silver State South. It is expected to produce enough electricity to power about 80,000 California homes when it is completed in 2016.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police allege that an 18-year-old was under the influence of methamphetamine and attempted to murder a Las Vegas police officer who tried to stop his vehicle as he drove past the scene of an earlier accident. Jacob Alexander Groh was held yesterday at the Clark County jail in Las Vegas pending an initial court appearance on charges that could also include hit-and-run in another crash while fleeing police.
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — MGM Resorts International is selling a Henderson casino that was built before the Hoover Dam and contains a vault that once guarded wages for the project's construction workers. The casino company announced yesterday that it would sell the 83-year-old Railroad Pass Hotel and Casino to Henderson-based First Federal Realty. The new owners say they plan to keep all current employees.
