INSTITUTE, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia State University says fall enrollment has increased by more than 6 percent over the 2013 academic year.

The university says it's the second consecutive year of increased enrollment, based on preliminary fall 2014 figures. Retention is also up.

Fall enrollment now stands at 2,847 students, an increase of 170 students.

President Brian O. Hemphill calls the increase a "remarkable achievement."

The increase comes with the opening of a new residence hall.

Final enrollment figures for the 2014-2015 academic year will be released in October.
