RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A lawyer for former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell says he'll appeal McDonnell's conviction on corruption charges. The Republican conservative and his wife Maureen were convicted Thursday on 20 of the 26 counts they faced. Prosecutors say the couple accepted more than $165,000 in gifts from a business executive in exchange for promoting a dietary supplement. They could face decades in prison when they're sentenced in January.
NEWPORT, Wales (AP) — Ukraine's president says he has "careful optimism" that a peace deal can be reached with Russian-backed separatists. President Petro Poroshenko offered the view on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Wales. He also says he's ready to order a cease-fire in eastern Ukraine if a deal is signed at scheduled talks Friday in Minsk, Belarus (BEHL'-uh-roos). The rebels have said they are ready to declare a truce if agreement can be reached on a political settlement for the mostly Russian-speaking region.
MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) — The U.S. Agency for International Development says it will donate $75 million to fund more than 1,000 beds in Ebola treatment centers in Liberia. The American aid agency also says the money will be used to buy 130,000 more protective suits for health care workers. Meanwhile, a third American health care worker infected with the virus is expected to arrive in Nebraska on Friday for treatment at an isolation facility in Omaha.
BOSTON (AP) — A pharmacist who oversaw the sterile rooms at a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy responsible for a deadly meningitis outbreak has been arrested. Federal officials say Glenn Adam Chin was detained as he was about to board a flight for Hong Kong. Investigators say the New England Compounding Center didn't properly sterilize or test equipment and concealed the unsafe practices. The outbreak killed 64 people and sickened about 750 people in 20 states.
NEW YORK (AP) — She's being remembered for her snarky red carpet fashion commentary and for poking fun at her own shortcomings. Joan Rivers has died a little more than a week after going into cardiac arrest following a routine medical procedure at a doctor's office. Her final audience was loved ones. Rivers' daughter Melissa says her mother would want laughter to return soon.
