URBANA, Ill. (AP) — The University of Illinois College of Medicine is now proposing that a potential engineering-based medical program be in Chicago rather than Urbana-Champaign.
The Urbana-Champaign campus has been discussing a new medical school in partnership with the local Carle Foundation hospital and presented its plan to a committee of university trustees on Wednesday.
But according to The News-Gazette (http://bit.ly/1uC56QP ), Chicago campus administrators pitched their plan to build a larger engineering-based program within the College of Medicine.
Chicago Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares said a new medical school would lead to duplication.
Urbana-Champaign Chancellor Phyllis Wise questioned how the Chicago plan would be funded and noted that it doesn't include any means for better access to federal research funding for Urbana faculty. That's a key reason for proposing the new medical school.
