NEW YORK (AP) — Ekaterina Makarova (ma-kah-ROH'-vuh) has moved into a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time by beating 16th seed Victoria Azarenka (ah-zah-REN'-kuh) 6-4, 6-2 at the U.S. Open. The 26-year old Russian has not dropped a set in five wins at Flushing Meadows.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Michael Sam has been signed to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad, making him the first openly gay player to open the season with an NFL team. Sam was released by St. Louis earlier this week. The Cowboys are looking for some pass rushing help after injuries have left some questions about their defensive line.

NEW YORK (AP) — The family of Junior Seau (SAY'-ow) has opted out of the proposed NFL settlement with former players over concussion-related injuries. The family will continue its wrongful death lawsuit against the league, after Seau committed suicide in 2012.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR's Nationwide Series will be replaced by the NASCAR Xfinity Series starting next season. Comcast Corp. has signed a 10-year agreement with NASCAR to replace Nationwide Insurance as the title sponsor of the second-tier series.

BILBOA, Spain (AP) — The United States takes a 57-game winning streak into their Basketball World Cup meeting with the Dominican Republic today. The two teams met in a pre-tournament exhibition last month, with the Americans winning 105-62. The US has won its first three tournament games and top Group C.
