CHICAGO (AP) — The first day of the school year saw only 12 students show up at a Chicago high school.
Dyett High School is scheduled to close next year, and the Chicago Public Schools allowed students who wanted to graduate from the school to continue to attend classes there this year. Most transferred to other schools.
Dyett student Kenneth Brown told WBBM-TV there were "only two real teachers." He added gym class was taken on a computer.
The Chicago Teachers Union has asked the Board of Education to reconsider closing Dyett.
Alderman Will Burns, in whose ward Dyett is located, says he's hopeful that with the right plan, the board might reverse its decision.
Burns says the school has a lot going for it, including a swimming pool and a new gym.
