BEIRUT (AP) — If the video is authenticated, Islamic State extremists have beheaded American journalist Steven Sotloff. A video distributed today titled "A Second Message to America," shows Sotloff's killing, possibly somewhere in Syria. A spokesman for Sotloff's family says it's aware of the video and wants to grieve privately. The Obama administration calls the video a sickening act of brutality.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — The leader of the Islamic extremist group al-Shabab may have been killed last night by U.S. airstrikes in Somalia. U.S. forces took out two cars with missiles. One of them is believed to have been carrying Ahmed Abdi Godane. Al-Shabab is believed responsible for last year's attack on a mall in Nairobi, Kenya that killed at least 67 people.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A jury in Los Angeles convicted a career criminal in the serial strangling of three women in the 1980s in Los Angeles. Samuel Little, who is 74, was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder. Prosecutors believe Little is likely responsible for at least 40 killings since 1980. Authorities in eight other states are looking for possible links.

NEW YORK (AP) — Home Depot says it's working with banks and law enforcement to investigate what it's calling "unusual activity" that could be a credit card data breach. A spokeswoman says retailer is "aggressively gathering facts" and will notify customers immediately if it confirms a security breach. Businesses that have recently had their security walls broken include Target, Supervalu and P.F. Chang.

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (AP) — The NFL has suspended Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay for the first six games of the season and fined him $500,000 for violating its personal conduct policy. The penalty came hours after Irsay pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor DWI count stemming from an embarrassing March traffic stop. Various prescription drugs and more than $29,000 in cash were found in his vehicle.
