DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — The World Health Organization is warning of a worsening crisis over the spread of Ebola in West Africa. The U.N. health agency said more than 500 cases were recorded over the past week, by far the worst toll of any week so far. The vast majority of the cases were in Liberia, but the agency said it was also the highest number of cases in one week for Guinea and Sierra Leone. The outbreak has killed more than half of the 3,000 people it has sickened.
GENEVA (AP) — The U.N. human rights office says reports from a 34-member U.N. monitoring mission in Ukraine show both sides committing a range of abuses targeting civilians trapped in urban areas or trying to flee through so-called safe corridors. Officials say around three dozen people a day are being killed in eastern Ukraine and the death toll has risen to at least 2,220.
JERUSALEM (AP) — Forensic investigators have identified a body found in Israel as that of seminary student Aharon Sofer. He disappeared while hiking in Jerusalem last week. Authorities say, however, that there is no evidence of foul play.
REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Icelandic authorities say no volcanic ash has been detected, but they are raising the aviation warning code to red after a small fissure eruption near a volcano that lies under a large glacier. The event was described as being not highly explosive — and thus not producing much of the fine ash that can affect aircraft engines.
BERLIN (AP) - Police say a leftist group is claiming responsibility for an arson attack on Berlin's subway system that is causing delays for thousands of commuters. Police spokesman Klaus Schubert says an anonymous online message from the group claims it set fire to a power-cable shaft to call attention to the conditions of illegal refugees in Germany.
