NEW HOPE, Minn. (AP) — A cousin of an American killed in Syria tells the Minneapolis Star Tribune that she knew Douglas McArthur McCain had "strong Muslim beliefs." But she says McCain told relatives he was in Turkey. A U.S. official says it's believed McCain was in Syria to fight alongside a terrorist group, most likely Islamic State. He grew up in suburban Minneapolis but had most recently lived in San Diego.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A woman who had been working in Syria for humanitarian groups is being held by the Islamic State militant group. Her family confirms the abduction. She's the third American known to have been kidnapped by the extremists. The family and U.S. officials asked that the woman not be identified out of fear for her safety.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — He's only been charged with killing one person, but authorities in Los Angeles say a man in custody is a serial killer. Alexander Hernandez is suspected of shooting seven people over five days, four of them fatally. Three victims were critically wounded. The shootings began early last Wednesday when a woman was wounded by a man in an SUV. Two dogs were also shot and killed.

KEARNS, Utah (AP) — A newborn baby is in extremely critical condition after her 24-year-old mother left her in a neighbor's trash can. The child was heard by a woman in suburban Salt Lake City who thought she heard a kitten meowing. The mother is being questioned. Police and health officials say the child could have been dropped off at a hospital without consequences.

WASHINGTON (AP) — After decades of trying, civil war buffs and the descendants of a Union Army soldier killed at the Battle of Gettysburg have scored a victory. The White House says President Barack Obama has approved a Medal of Honor for 1st Lt. Alonzo H. Cushing. He was killed standing his ground against a Confederate infantry assault.
