LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas judge is questioning the source of bail money that a former Nevada state prison guard wants to post while facing charges that he smuggled contraband to Las Vegas Strip shooting suspect Ammar Harris. Derland Blake's attorney says his client faces a significant risk from other jail inmates and wants to post a $50,000 bond.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Washoe County judge says a 73-year-old man who shot and killed an unarmed trespasser isn't a flight risk before his Sept. 3 arraignment. The judge says Wayne Burgarello's health is poor and he has lifelong ties to the community. The judge reduced his bail from $2 million to $150,000 in a hearing today. Burgarello says the shooting was in self-defense.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada's Class of 2014 scored higher than the national average in the English, reading and math sections of the ACT exam, although only about one-third of graduates took the test. A report released this week showed Nevada test-takers earned an average composite score of 21.2 on a 36-point scale that combines scores for English, reading, math and science subtests. That's slightly above the national average composite score of 21.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada prison officials say a 69-year-old convicted child sex offender who died while serving a 50-years-to-life prison sentence had a chronic medical condition. The Nevada Department of Corrections says an autopsy will be conducted following the death of Russell Gates. Gates died Monday at a prison medical center.
