ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A northern New York couple is being held without bail after their arraignment in the kidnapping of two Amish girls from a farm stand. Stephen Howells and Nicole Vaisey, both of Hermon, are charged with two counts of first-degree kidnapping. They entered no pleas and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Michael Brown's relatives say even if he was a suspect in a robbery, there was no justification for a police officer to shoot and kill the teen. Police in Ferguson, Missouri allege the young man had been suspected of stealing a $49 box of cigars from a convenience store. Police Chief Thomas Jackson says the officer did not know the teen was a robbery suspect at the time of the shooting. A late-night protest yesterday produced looting of the same store.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a potential 2016 presidential hopeful, has legal troubles on the home front. He's been indicted by a grand jury in Austin for allegedly abusing the powers of his office by carrying out a threat to veto funding for state prosecutors investigating public corruption. Perry's defense attorney, whose $450-per hour fees are being paid for by state funds, calls the indictment "political abuse of the court system."
KAMENSK-SHAKHTINSKY, Russia (AP) — Complicated procedures drag on for the delivery of aid from Russia to civilians caught in fighting between Ukrainian forces and separatists in eastern Ukraine. Hundreds of trucks in a Russian aid convoy are still waiting near the Ukrainian border. Ukrainian officials are concerned that the mission could be a disguised effort to send equipment to pro-Russia rebels.

Colleen Hanabusa, closing out a tight, emotional race. Schatz extended his slim vote lead late yesterday during a makeup election for thousands of voters in two remote precincts who couldn't cast ballots last Saturday.
