LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas Board of Education has voted to allow public hearings on a process that would assign A- through-F letter grades to the state's public schools.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (http://bit.ly/1pRjO5o ) reports that the board members were divided Thursday on whether Arkansas residents should vet the grading proposal presented by the Arkansas Board of Education.

Three board members voted against the measure. They said the public hearings and a planned Nov. 1 implementation are premature.

In 2013, state legislators passed an act to assign grades in an effort to identify performance and areas of improvement of every public school. The law gave the state board the responsibility of establishing the grading methods and implementation.

Many educators also expressed concerns about the weighted assessment.
