MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — Prosecutors are telling a judge there is no need to move the trial of a Missoula homeowner accused of shooting and killing an unarmed exchange student who entered his garage.
Markus Kaarma's attorneys have said the Missoula County jury pool has been tainted by media coverage and community outcry about the April 27 shooting of Diren Dede.
Missoula Deputy County Attorney said in a response filed earlier this month that the media coverage has been factual and not inflammatory. She says negative reader comments attached to online articles about the shooting are not representative of the county's population.
District Judge Ed McLean will make the decision on whether to move the trial.
Kaarma is charged with deliberate homicide. His attorneys say he shot the 17-year-old German exchange student in self-defense.
