CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia is getting $1 million in federal funding for a program that provides home visiting services for pregnant women and parents of young children.
The funding from the Department of Health and Human Services is part of the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program established by the Affordable Care Act.
Officials say the funding will allow the state to continue and expand voluntary, evidence-based home visiting services to women during pregnancy and to parents with young children up to age five.
As part of the program, families get home visits by a nurse, social worker, or early childhood educator during pregnancy and in the first years of life to promote child health and development.
The programs also have been show to prevent child abuse and neglect.
