DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's president says his country is prepared to accept humanitarian assistance in eastern Ukraine. But he says it must come in without military accompaniment, it must pass through border checkpoints under Ukrainian control and the mission must be international in character. The statement comes after a top leader of the pro-Russia separatists said they would accept a cease-fire to let humanitarian aid into their stronghold, which is now surrounded by Ukrainian troops.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Crews have gained more control over a wildfire in Oregon's Columbia River Gorge, prompting authorities to lift the evacuation order for 740 threatened residences. The state Department of Forestry says the fire that has burned about 5 square miles since it started Tuesday is now about 55 percent contained. But officials are telling residents to remain on alert because firefighters are concerned about unburned fuel near the fire.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Nearly 2,000 firefighters and 15 helicopters have been battling a wildfire in Northern California. Eight firefighters suffered minor burns fighting the blaze in the Wilderness Lodge Area of Mendocino County. The three Santa Clara County firefighters and five inmate firefighters were airlifted to the burn center at the University of California, Davis, for treatment and released hours later.
HONOLULU (AP) — Tourists are getting back to their vacations in Hawaii after a visit from Tropical Storm Iselle (ee-SEHL'). Despite on-and-off rain, visitors returned to the beaches and restaurants on the islands of Oahu (oh-AH'-hoo) and Maui (MOW'-ee). It's a different story on the southwestern part of the Big Island of Hawaii, though, where the storm came ashore yesterday. A large, rural swath of the island has beeb without electricity for more than 24 hours and downed trees are blocking roads.
UNDATED (AP) — A former paratrooper who lost all four limbs in Afghanistan has made a parachute jump in Maine. And the wife of Maine's governor jumped, too, even though she's afraid of heights. Ann LePage says she couldn't turn down the challenge from retired Army Staff Sgt. Travis Mills, who doesn't believe in saying "I can't." Both jumped today with a parachute team to raise money for a veteran center and museum.
