BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — Investigators are trying to determine a motive after multiple men in masks stormed a Central California apartment and opened fire, killing three men and wounding another.

Kern County Sheriff's officials say the suspects fled on foot after Wednesday night's shooting in Bakersfield, and they remain at large. There also were children inside the apartment, but they were not hurt.

The wounded man was listed in serious but stable condition.

Sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt says investigators are still working to identify the suspects and determine what, if any, relationship they had with the victims.

He identified the three men who were slain as 29-year-old Zephaniah Lee Matthews, 23-year-old Junior Alfonzo Contreras and 22-year-old Daniel Turrel Watkins. All three were pronounced dead at Kern Medical Center.
