JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Onslow County schools are considering banning the spanking of students.
The Daily News of Jacksonville reports (http://bit.ly/1uca0nJ ) the school board will discuss a ban on corporal punishment at Tuesday's meeting.
A report says spanking is rarely used in the district. Just one instance of paddling was reported in the county during the 2012-13 school year.
Children's advocacy group NC Child says only six school districts in the state still allow corporal punishment, and only two of them have used it more than a few times.
In the 2012-13 school year, Robeson County schools reported 141 spankings, while Graham County reported 31.
The group sent a letter to districts that still allow spankings asking them to stop because they think it is a poor way to enforce discipline.
