NEW YORK (AP) — New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira (teh-SHEHR'-uh) will be sidelined for at least three games because of a strained muscle in his back, the latest injury to slow the team's leading run producer. Teixeira has been hampered by a left lower lat injury that was causing spasms in his back for about a month, and the pain escalated over the weekend.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Phillies have activated pitcher Cliff Lee, infielder Reid Brignac (BRIHN'-yak) and catcher Wil Nieves (nee-AY'-vihs) from the disabled list. Lee is starting tonight against San Francisco after missing nine weeks because of an elbow strain. Brignac missed a month because of an ankle injury. Nieves also missed a month because of a quadriceps injury.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — San Francisco has placed righty Matt Cain on the disabled list because of elbow inflammation. Cain is only 2-7 with a career-worst 4.18 ERA in 15 games. He's earning $20 million this season in the middle of a $140 million, eight-year contract.
TORONTO (AP) - The Toronto Maple Leafs and Cody Franson have avoided arbitration, agreeing to a $3.3 million, one-year contract. This is the third straight one-year deal for the defenseman, who missed most of training camp last season after a contract dispute. He led all Toronto defensemen with 33 points last season.
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Free-agent guard Nick Young has signed a multiyear deal to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers. Young averaged a career-high 17.9 points in his first season with the Lakers playing mostly off the bench.
