GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Hamas is claiming it has captured an Israeli soldier in Gaza. The claim has not been verified, but the Israeli military says it's investigating the report. Hamas has made similar claims of capturing Israelis in the past that were not true. Still, the announcement of the soldier's capture on Gaza TV set off celebration in the streets of Gaza City.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is stepping up efforts to forge a truce between Israel and the militant Hamas movement by sending Secretary of State John Kerry to the Middle East. The State Department says Kerry will leave early Monday for Egypt. Cairo has offered a cease-fire plan that is backed by the U.S. and Israel. But Hamas has rejected it and is relying on the governments of Qatar and Turkey for an alternative proposal. More than 430 Palestinians and 20 Israelis have been killed over the last two weeks.

TOREZ, Ukraine (AP) — Pro-Russian rebels have piled nearly 200 bodies from the downed Malaysian jetliner into four refrigerated boxcars in eastern Ukraine, while cranes at the crash scene have been moving big chunks of the Boeing 777. Western leaders are condemning the moves, accusing the rebels of tampering with the site. Secretary of State John Kerry says there's "powerful" evidence that the rebels shot down the plane with a Russian surface-to-air missile and training.

WINTHROP, Wash. (AP) — Forecasters say firefighters in Washington state should get a break from cooler temperatures and lighter winds tomorrow and Tuesday. The latest estimates put the fire in the scenic Methow (MET'-how) Valley at more than 370 square miles. The Okanogan (oh-kah-NAH'-guhn) County sheriff says he expects the blaze has destroyed more than 150 homes and other buildings.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor James Garner has died. He burst on the scene in the 1950s TV Western "Maverick," which led to a long career in TV and films, including the 1970s series "The Rockford Files" and his Oscar-nominated "Murphy's Romance." The 86-year-old was found dead of natural causes at his Los Angeles home yesterday.
