SALT LAKE CITY — From a Supermoon to World War II, here are some stories you may have missed this weekend. As always, click the headlines to read the full story.

Supermoon is here!

Look! Up in the sky! It's supermoon!

Because our celestial neighbor was relatively close to Earth Saturday night, the full moon appeared to be unusually large.

That distance between the Earth and the moon varies because the moon follows an elliptical orbit. When it's close and full, it appears bigger and brighter than normal, although the difference can be hard to detect.

3 arrested in stabbing at Taylorsville skate park

Police arrested three men Saturday night suspected of being involved in a fight at a skate park during which one man was stabbed.

Abishek Kumar, 20, Jordan Morrell, 20, and Christian Ancheta, 20, came to the Taylorsville North End skate park, 4721 S. Redwood Road, and initiated a fight, according to Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

One man, 22, was not originally involved in the fight but ran over to see what was happening. One of the three men stabbed him in the stomach, Hoyal said. One punched another man with brass knuckles and swiped at another with a knife. Those injured were treated for their injuries at the scene.

Kittens found covered in glue; investigation underway

The little black and white kitten already has a fitting name, should he find an owner.

"Lucky would be a good name," Autumn Wagner, community cat coordinator for Best Friends Animal Society suggested Saturday. "He is up for adoption, so he is looking for his new home, and has quite a story."

The male kitten, who is believed to be between 6 and 7 weeks old, was found last month with his feet glued together. His tail has been glued to his feet, Wagner said.

9-year-old driver backs grandpa's Jeep into neighbor's house

A house sustained major damage Saturday when a 9-year-old crashed his grandfather's Jeep through the front window and into the living room.

The accident happened at 1321 W. Catherine Street about 2 p.m. when the neighbor who lives across the street allowed his grandson to back the vehicle out of the garage, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Scott White.

"During the process of backing up, the grandson gets a little bit confused and pushes on the gas instead of the brake, and they go at a high rate of speed through the neighbor's house," White said.

The Manti parachute plant helped save lives during WWII

Tucked behind the Manti Market grocery story, nestled in a small sea of weeds, there’s an empty shell of brick and dust. The old factory sits idle now, but 72 years ago in this small central Utah town, hundreds of women with sewing machines helped save lives a world away. They sewed parachutes.

The Standard Parachute Company of San Diego, looking to expand World War II operations, was lured to Manti by Gov. Herbert Maw in 1942.

For the people of Sanpete County, still hard-hit by the Depression, the new business was, according to Dora Fautin, “a lifesaver.”
