INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — State health officials say mosquitoes in two Indiana counties have tested positive for the West Nile virus.
The state health department said Wednesday that mosquitoes in Marshall and Pike counties were confirmed to have the virus. No cases of humans contracting it have been reported this year.
Indiana's health department says it expects more mosquitoes to test positive in other counties as the summer progresses. Officials add that it's difficult to predict how severe the West Nile virus season will be since temperatures and rainfall determine mosquito populations.
State Health Commissioner William VanNess recommends residents avoid outdoor activity during afternoon and evening hours and wear long-sleeved clothing to prevent bug bites. He also advises installing screens on windows and doors and using insect repellent.
