WINTERS, Calif. (AP) — Rugged terrain, shifting winds and hot, dry conditions have been hampering efforts to contain a wildfire in Northern California that's burned to the edge of a rural neighborhood. The blaze, which broke out Friday, has burned about 10 square miles in Yolo County, and it's only 30 percent contained. Officials say it still has "a potential for extreme growth."
WASHINGTON (AP) — Turn on your electronic devices. That's what passengers at some overseas airports with flights to the U.S. will be required to do before they board. U.S. intelligence officials have been concerned about new al-Qaida efforts to produce a bomb that would go undetected through airport security. And Homeland Security Secretary Jeh (jay) Johnson recently ordered the Transportation Security Administration to call for extra security measures.
JERUSALEM (AP) — The Islamic militant group Hamas is vowing revenge for the deaths of seven of its members in an airstrike. Israel says it carried out airstrikes on at least 14 "terror" sites in retaliation to a recent spike in attacks from Gaza. Hamas, which rules Gaza, says "the enemy will pay a tremendous price." Tensions have increased on Israel's Gaza border since the abduction and killing of three Israeli teens and the apparent revenge killing by Israeli extremists of a Palestinian teen.
BEIJING (AP) — Seventeen coal miners have died after being trapped by a weekend gas explosion in northwestern China. An official news agency reports the miners were trapped Saturday by the blast, and the cause is being investigated. China has the world's deadliest mines, although the safety record has improved as regulators strengthen enforcement of safety rules.
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in Newport Beach, California say a lifeguard has drowned while trying to rescue a swimmer. Rescue officials say 32-year-old Ben Carlson was pulled from the water Sunday evening by fellow lifeguards following a frantic 90-minute ocean search. Carlson had gone into the water to help a swimmer in trouble when they were hit by a 10-foot swell. The swimmer made it to shore safely.
