CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A task force of Nevada lawmakers, educators and parents are recommending that the state provide schools with more money to educate low-income and English language learner students. The Las Vegas Review-Journal the state's existing formula provides the same amount of per-pupil funding regardless of whether a student lives in poverty or has limited English skills.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Reno-area bus riders won't have to worry about a transit workers' strike for at least a month. The president of the union local says that the current contract that was set to expire at midnight will be extended through July 31. Union members voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike yesterday. Talks will continue in an effort to reach an agreement.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Officials have issued an excessive heat warning for the Las Vegas area for tomorrow and Wednesday as triple-digit temperatures are expected to bake the valley and Lake Mead this week. The National Weather Service says the Las Vegas valley will be sizzling with highs between 108 and 114 degrees. Temperatures are expected to cool slightly toward the end of the week.

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a 38-year-old Reno man who was found dead this weekend in the Truckee River in Sparks. Sparks fire Battalion Chief Barry Hagen tells the Reno Gazette-Journal that authorities were summoned yesterday afternoon, after a passer-by noticed the man's body floating about 10 feet from the river bank near Fisherman's Park.
