SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Herold "Huck" Gregory, the former Utah Symphony leader of 30 years, has died. He was 90 years old.
The symphony in a Tuesday statement to The Associated Press said Gregory is credited with doubling ticket sales and helping to launch the orchestra nationally. He was executive director from 1957 to 1986.
The symphony says Gregory was instrumental in establishing Utah as a performing arts center.
Under his direction, the orchestra took its first international tour in 1966 and about fifteen years later became the first symphony west of the Mississsippi to perform year-round.
He also helped to bring on music director Joseph Silverstein in 1982.
A Tuesday morning memorial service commemorates Gregory in Salt Lake City.
He is survived by his sister and three children.
