SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona school district is drawing fire for disciplining a kindergartner over what officials call "sexual misconduct."
KTVK-TV reports (http://goo.gl/891MJy) that Dysart Unified School District Assistant Superintendent Jim Dean defended Friday the discipline against a 5-year-old boy who pulled his pants down on an elementary school playground.
The boy received detention for what the school has deemed sexual misconduct and the label will remain in the boy's permanent school file.
The boy's mother says she was not notified of the incident or the note her son signed in the assistant principal's office until after the fact.
District policy states that a parent does not have to be present for a disciplinary meeting unless the student requests his or her parent.
School officials have denied the mother's appeal.
