WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says the U.S. is flying armed drones over Baghdad. But an official points out that President Barack Obama has not authorized airstrikes in Iraq, where Sunni extremists are leading an uprising that has overrun Iraqi forces. The official says the drone flights are meant for surveillance and to protect U.S. interests.

BRUSSELS (AP) —Ukraine's new president has signed a free-trade deal binding his country more closely to Western Europe. Efforts to reach the agreement are what triggered the bloodshed and political convulsions of the past seven months. Meanwhile, the cease-fire in eastern Ukraine has been extended through Monday night.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has taken in a Marine Corps parade with his family. The 57-year-old summertime tradition features the U.S. Marine Band in a display of music and marching just after sunset. The band is also known as "The President's Own." The parade is held every Friday night during the summer at the Marine Barracks in southeast Washington.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Officials who oversee the operation of San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Bridge have voted unanimously to spend $76 million for a net system that would prevent people from jumping to their deaths. Since it opened in 1937, more than 1,400 people have plunged to their deaths, including a record 46 suicides last year.

NEW YORK (AP) — Singer-songwriter Bobby Womack has died. Womack is credited with influencing some of music's top acts in the 1960's, including the Rolling Stones. His death was confirmed by a representative. Womack, who was 70, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease two years ago and dealt with other health issues including prostate cancer. But he performed recently and seemed in good health and spirits.
