BRUSSELS (AP) — Ukraine has strengthened ties with the European Union by signing a trade and economic deal. President Petro Poroshenko says it may be the "most important day" for his country since it became independent from the former Soviet Union. Ukrainian businesses whose goods and practices meet EU standards will be able to trade freely in any EU country without tariffs or restrictions. Likewise, EU goods and services will be able to sell more easily and cheaply in Ukraine.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States plans to attempt some fence-mending with China next month. Washington plans to urge Beijing to resume discussions on cybersecurity that were suspended abruptly after the U.S. charged five Chinese military officers with hacking into U.S. companies to steal trade secrets.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Problems in the health care system for veterans are on President Barack Obama's agenda today. The White House says Obama will get an update in a meeting with Acting Secretary Sloan Gibson after returning from a two-day trip to Minnesota. Top White House aide Rob Nabors will join them in the Oval Office.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Human Rights Watch is pointing a finger at Sunni militants who have overrun large swaths of northern Iraq recently. The U.S.-based group says militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant killed between 160 and 190 men in two locations in Tikrit between June 11 and June 14. The group says the number of victims may actually be higher.

HYDERABAD, India (AP) — Authorities say at least 14 people are dead in the explosion of a state-owned gas pipeline that also sparked a massive fire and prompted evacuations in southern India. An official says the fire is out and rescue operations have begun. About 15 injured people were taken to nearby hospitals where doctors say the condition of at least six of them is critical.
