NEW YORK (AP) — Documents show that safeguards were not followed to prevent at least nine of the 11 suicides that have happened in New York City jails since 2009. In one case, a mentally ill inmate hanged himself from a shower pipe on his third try in three days. Orders that he be put on 24-hour suicide watch were never carried out. The city and state investigative documents were obtained by The Associated Press via public records requests.
DENALI NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE, Alaska (AP) — Dozens of lodge guests and employees at Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska are trapped by flooding and they're waiting for an airlift. The flooding hit one lodge, and rockfalls have prompted the closure of the only road into the park. A park spokeswoman says other lodges in the area have not flooded and their guests should be able to get out by road soon, after some temporary road repairs are completed.
HYDERABAD, India (AP) — A gas pipeline explosion in India has killed 13 people in Andhra Pradesh state. The local home minister says the blast hit a pipeline of the state-owned Gas Authority of India Limited Friday morning. The pipeline runs through a small village. Local officials say the blast caused a massive fire and surrounding areas were evacuated.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A person familiar with changes at "The View" says Jenny McCarthy is leaving as co-host after one season. McCarthy's exit comes on the heels of Sherri Shepherd's announcement Thursday that she's leaving the daytime talk show. On McCarthy's Twitter account she posts, "If Sherri goes ... I go too."
