White House seeks aid for Syrian rebels...Soldier sentence awaited...Actor put out of theater

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has asked Congress for $500 million to arm and train moderate Syrian rebels. The train-and-equip mission would be overseen by the Pentagon. The moderates are battling both Syrian forces and Sunni extremists who are also overwhelming Iraqi troops. The bloody civil war in Syria is now in its fourth year.

IZVARYNE, Ukraine (AP) — Thousands are making their way into Russia just as a shaky cease-fire in the eastern Ukraine is expiring. Russia says tens of thousands of Ukrainians have come in the 2 1/2 months since Ukraine's government began fighting Pro-Russia separatists. Meanwhile in Brussels, German Chancellor Angela Merkel (AHN'-geh-lah MEHR'-kuhl) and Secretary of State John Kerry say they are looking for more action from Moscow ahead of a Friday summit of European Union leaders. They will be considering a new round of sanctions against Russia.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea has launched test missiles. Its state media said Friday that leader Kim Jong Un has guided the launches of its newly developed precision guided missiles. South Korean defense officials said the projectiles fired from an eastern port city flew about 120 miles before harmlessly landing into the waters off its east coast. The exact type of those projectiles isn't immediately known.

HONOLULU (AP) — A jury in Honolulu has told a judge it's decided the punishment of a former soldier convicted of killing his 5-year-old daughter. The panel decided late Thursday whether Naeem Williams will be executed or sentenced to life in prison. But it asked that the judge to delay reading the verdict because some jurors felt emotionally drained. The sentence will be read Friday morning.

NEW YORK (AP) — Police in New York say actor Shia LaBeouf (SHY'-uh luh-BUF') has been taken out of a theater for being disorderly. A spokesman for the Broadway show "Caberet" says LaBeouf was "disruptive during Act 1" and was escorted out of the theater at intermission. The 28-year-old former star of the "Transformers" franchise was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and criminal trespass.
