SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Jazz announced Wednesday evening that they have extended a qualifying offer to Gordon Hayward.

Hayward, who became a restricted free agent at the conclusion of the 2013- 14 season, was looked to as a cornerstone piece of the rebuilding Jazz team. At the beginning of the season, the Jazz and Hayward were not able to come to an agreement on terms of a contract extension.

The Jazz were required to submit a qualifying offer before June 30 in order to retain the right of first refusal under the new collective bargaining agreement. The offer allows the Jazz to counter any offer teams give Hayward.

Although other teams have previously said they would have interest in signing Hayward, the Jazz organization has repeatedly said it intends to sign Hayward. Whether the Jazz would counter a max deal for Hayward, if offered, is unknown at this time. Under the new CBA rules, Hayward could make just over $50 million in a five-year deal if given a max contract.

Hayward started in 77 games in the 2013-14 season, averaging 16.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists. Although Hayward put up a decent stat line this last season, he was criticized for not being able to take control of a down team.
