MIAMI (AP) — LeBron James has informed the Miami Heat that he will test the free agent waters this offseason. He had until today to let the club know his plans. In four seasons with the Heat James played in four NBA Finals and won two NBA championships.
LONDON (AP) — Women's top seed Serena Williams won her opening match at Wimbledon today. Among the other winners were No. 5 Maria Sharapova (shah-rah-POH'-vah) and on the men's side of things second seed Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-ehl nah-DAHL'), No. 4 Roger Federer and ninth-seeded American John Isner (IHZ'-nur).
MIAMI (AP) — Center Mike Pouncey of the Miami Dolphins is expected to miss the start of the season recovering from hip surgery. The Pro Bowl lineman was injured during offseason workouts and underwent surgery Monday that will likely sideline him for at least a couple of games in September.
UNDATED (AP) — U.S. World Cup team has announced that Jozy Altidore (JOH'-zee AL'-tih-door) will miss Thursday's game with Germany because of his strained left hamstring. Altidore suffered the injury in the opening match against Ghana and U.S. coach Jurgen (YUR'-gihn) Klinsmann says he hopes to have the forward back if the Americans qualify for the knockout stage.
BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — Tiger Woods held his first news conference since announcing he will play in this week's PGA event outside Washington, D.C. The former World No. 1 says he fully expects to contend in this week's event and that he is returning to competitive golf earlier than expected after undergoing back surgery in late March.
