ORONO, Maine (AP) — High school students and teachers and representatives of tribal communities are gathering at the University of Maine to come up with ideas for solutions related to stormwater management.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection, UMaine scientists and students, city water planners and several businesses are taking part of the weeklong Stormwater Management Research Team Institute. Participants will install wireless sensors at the Arctic Brook watershed in Bangor and collect data as citizen scientists.
All told, more than 70 high school students and teachers are participating.
The National Science Foundation's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research is supporting the effort. The idea is to empower female and minority high school students, their teachers and communities to come up with solutions for reducing harmful impacts of stormwater runoff.
