BAGHDAD (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry says the U.S. is prepared to take military action even if Iraq delays political reforms. Kerry visited Baghdad Monday, where he asked the country's Shiite-led government to set aside divisions in order to stop the vicious Sunni insurgency. Vice President Joe Biden discussed the Iraqi situation with the leaders of Turkey and Bahrain, two countries with a major stake in Iraq.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Iraq is promising that commandos deployed into Iraq will not be subject to the country's judicial process. Iraq has reached an agreement with the U.S. on legal protections for American troops deployed into Iraq to assess and advise forces on the sectarian violence that's threatening to tear apart the country. Three years ago, efforts to reach a similar pact for a larger U.S. force failed.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The head of the IRS is brushing aside accusations that his agency has blocked investigations into the targeting of tea party and other political groups. Commissioner John Koskinen is appearing at a rare evening hearing on Capitol Hill to answer questions about lost emails by former IRS head Lois Lerner — a key figure in the probe. Republican Congressman Darrell Issa (EYE'-suh), the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, is accusing Koskinen of misleading the committee when he promised to turn over Lerner's emails.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Mormon church has carried out the rare act of excommunicating the founder of a prominent women's group who staged demonstrations in a push for women to join the faith's priesthood. Scholars say the ousting of Kate Kelly sends a warning to others publicly challenging church practice.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Children needing lung transplants will have a better shot at the life-saving surgery. The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network is changing its rules and is now giving children more consideration for adult lungs. Last year, a federal judge ordered the network to add an 11-year-old cystic fibrosis patient in Pennsylvania to the adult list after a previous surgery failed. Now the girl is breathing on her own for the first time in three years.
