PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The first batch of mosquitoes tested in Rhode Island this season for two infectious diseases has come back negative.

The state Department of Environmental Management said Monday all 104 mosquito pools collected from 15 traps set statewide on June 9 have been confirmed negative for both West Nile and eastern equine encephalitis.

Test results for samples collected last week are pending at the department of health.

The environmental management department reports mosquito test results weekly. Positive findings usually prompt additional trapping and testing.

State officials emphasize the best defense against mosquito-borne disease is preventing bites in the first place.
