BAGHDAD (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry will likely have difficulty making headway in his today meeting with Iraq's prime minister on the current crisis facing the country. Kerry's task is to personally urge the Shiite-led government to give more power to political opponents before a Sunni insurgency gobbles up any more territory. Iraqi officials have often ignored U.S. advice to avoid the appearance of being controlled.
BRUSSELS (AP) — Russia could face more European sanctions over the situation in eastern Ukraine. Several European foreign ministers are threatening further sanctions if Russia fails to cooperate with Ukraine's proposed peace plan and doesn't stop the flow of arms and militants across its border into the region. The EU has so far refrained from imposing broad-based economic sanctions.
CAIRO (AP) — Three journalists for Al-Jazeera English have been convicted and sentenced by an Egyptian court to prison on terrorism-related charges. The three were arrested in December as part of a sweeping crackdown on Islamist supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi. One man, an Egyptian producer, got an additional three years on separate charges.
DALLAS (AP) — U.S. mayors plan to vote today on a resolution that encourages, but wouldn't mandate actions cities could take to fight off climate change. Attendees of the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting in Texas are considering encouraging cities to use natural solutions to "protect freshwater supplies, defend the nation's coastlines, maintain a healthy tree cover and protect air quality."
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — In Australia, the conservative prime minister is looking for a win this time around on his vow to repeal a carbon tax that the nation's worst greenhouse gas polluters have to pay. Tony Abbott reintroduced legislation to the Australian Parliament today. The bills were blocked by opposition lawmakers in March but new senators taking office in July are expected to turn the tide.
