BAGHDAD (AP) — The U. S. is looking for ways to work with Middle East nations, most of them led by Sunni governments, to curb the growth of the Sunni insurgency in Iraq that's seized much of the northern and western parts of the country. Secretary of State John Kerry, who's in the Middle East, says the group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is a "threat not only to Iraq, but to the entire region."
JERUSALEM (AP) —Israel is responding to a deadly cross-border attack in the Golan Heights that killed an Israeli teenager on Sunday. The Israeli military says it launched airstrikes early Monday on nine targets inside Syria where the attack emanated from. The Israeli military says a Syrian regional command center was among the targets.
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) — The U.S. military says it has intercepted a target over the Pacific Ocean in a test of the nation's Ballistic Missile Defense System. The military says sailors aboard a destroyer detected and tracked the missile that was launched from Kwajalein Atoll, and the interceptor that blasted off from California struck the target warhead as planned.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Border Patrol is canceling flights to bring nearly 300 Central American migrants from South Texas to California for processing, but they could be reinstated. A spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection says he doesn't know why the flights, scheduled to begin Monday, were shelved but he says planning is "in a very fluid state."
FILLMORE, Calif. (AP) — A dog belonging to a California firefighter who disappeared during a backpacking trip with his friend in the Los Padres National Forest has been rescued after nine days in the wilderness, but the pet's owner is still missing. Authorities say the search for Mike Herdman will be scaled back. Herdman vanished while chasing the runaway dog.
