BAGHDAD (AP) — Sunni fighters in Iraq have seized two border crossings today, one leading to Jordan and the other to Syria. And since Friday, they've captured four towns in western Iraq's Anbar province, where they already controlled the city of Fallujah and parts of the provincial capital, Ramadi. Militants linked to al-Qaida hope to carve out a purist Islamic state straddling Syria and Iraq.
CAIRO (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry says Sunni insurgents are a threat not just to Iraq, but to the entire Mideast and beyond. And he's asking Arab countries to resist funding them. Most Middle Eastern nations are led by Sunni governments and the U.S. is looking for ways to work with them to curb the growth of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, an offshoot of al-Qaida.
MONTREAL (AP) — Three men who escaped by helicopter from a Canadian prison two weeks ago have been captured. Quebec provincial police say the fugitives were arrested by police investigators accompanied by SWAT team members early today in a condominium building in Montreal. The three were awaiting trial on charges that included gansterism and murder when they escaped from a prison outside Quebec City on June 7.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Lawyers have been given the green light to scan the social media sites of jurors. The American Bar Association says it's ethical for lawyers to scour online for publicly available musings of citizens called for jury service, and even jurors in deliberations. But the ABA does warn lawyers against actively "following" or "friending" jurors or otherwise invading their private Internet areas. It's the first time the lawyers group has addressed how deeply attorneys and their consultants can probe for information about jurors and potential jurors.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Vegas ensemble comedy "Think Like a Man Too" is the weekend's top movie, edging out "22 Jump Street." ''How to Train Your Dragon 2" slid to No. 3. Clint Eastwood's new Four Seasons musical "Jersey Boys" opened in fourth place.
