BAGHDAD (AP) — Sunni militants have seized four towns in two days in Iraq's western Anbar province. The latest capture gives the insurgents control over the final stretch of a major highway to neighboring Jordan, a key artery for passengers and goods that has been infrequently used for months because of deteriorating security. The insurgents appear to be marching toward a key dam in the city of Haditha (hah-DEE'-thuh).

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is warning that al-Qaida-inspired militants who are seizing territory in Iraq could grow in power and destabilize other countries in the region. He predicts that the Iraqi public will ultimately reject the Sunni insurgents who are threatening Iraq's government, but says the group still represents a medium and long-term threat to the United States. Obama tells CBS the insurgency in Iraq and neighboring Syria is just one of an array of threats the U.S. must guard against.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's top leader says he is against U.S. intervention in neighboring Iraq, where Islamic extremists and Sunni militants opposed to Tehran have seized a number of towns and cities. The official IRNA news agency quotes Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (hah-meh-neh-EE') as saying he opposes the intervention of the U.S. and others "in the domestic affairs of Iraq." He says Iraq's government and its people, with help of top clerics, will be able to handle the matter.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean troops have exchanged fire with a runaway soldier who was surrounded in a forest after he killed five comrades near his North Korea border outpost. That's according to a South Korean defense ministry official, who says a platoon leader was wounded when the sergeant threw a grenade and fired on the military personnel closing in on him. The official says troops fired back.

MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, Wash. (AP) — The search for missing outdoors writer Karen Sykes has been suspended with the recovery of a woman's body on Washington's Mount Rainier. The body hasn't been identified. A Mount Rainier National Park spokeswoman says the remains were found yesterday in rough, steep terrain.
