CASSANO ALL'JONIO, Italy (AP) — Pope Francis says all mobsters are automatically excommunicated from the Catholic Church. At an outdoor Mass in Calabria, Italy, today, Francis denounced the syndicate for what he called its "adoration of evil and contempt for the common good." Calabria is the power base of a global drug trafficking syndicate that also extorts local businesses.

UNDATED (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin is ordering military forces in central Russia on combat alert as well as a drill of airborne troops, a day after Ukraine ordered a unilateral cease-fire with pro-Russian rebels. As far as that cease-fire is concerned, Putin says he supports it but he says Kiev's blueprint for peace would not be viable without action to start peace negotiations.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — NATO says there are no fatalities after an attack on one of its air bases in Afghanistan. Officials also say there was no damage to equipment or buildings at the base on the outskirts of the eastern city of Jalalabad. The attack on Saturday came as scattered violence elsewhere in Afghanistan left 13 people dead.

FALFURRIAS, Texas (AP) - Researchers say they've uncovered mass graves in a South Texas cemetery. They believe the graves contain the bodies of immigrants who died crossing into the U.S. illegally. The Corpus Christi Caller Times reports some grave markers bore the name of a Falfurrias funeral home. Officials say the funeral home is paid to handle bodies found in remote areas.

URBANDALE, Iowa (AP) — It's being seen as a setback for the tea party and libertarian forces in Iowa. Establishment Republicans have nominated their candidate for a House seat in one of the nation's most competitive congressional districts. David Young was nominated today in Iowa's 3rd District. Young is a former chief of staff for Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley.
