COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) — Columbus State University has almost finished a security upgrade for its campus.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports (http://bit.ly/1jFrsue ) the $300,000 project began in 2011. Among the improvements are card scanner updates that allow school officials to lock all campus buildings remotely and high-resolution security cameras that can capture license plate numbers and images of suspects.

Columbus State police Lt. Jeremy Reddish say the school started the project when they realized the university's growth would outpace security needs. The toured other campuses and hired an outside consultant to make recommendations.

Reddish says the department also has more improvements planned, including renovating the 54 emergency call boxes on campus to make them more noticeable. The boxes allow students and faculty to connect quickly to police during emergencies.
