SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Authorities in Antigua say a man serving a life sentence in the Caribbean island for killing a honeymooning Welsh couple has been fatally shot by police after escaping from prison.

Police spokesman Cpl. Frankie Thomas said in a phone interview Friday that Avie Howell was taken to a hospital after a confrontation with police and was pronounced dead.

He says Howell was armed and charged at police, but declines to provide further details.

Thomas says police are still looking for an inmate who escaped with Howell.

Howell was one of two men convicted in the 2008 killing of Benjamin and Catherine Mullany of Wales. He was sentenced in 2011 to three consecutive life sentences for killing the couple and a shopkeeper. He was awaiting trial in two other deaths.
