WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is moving to ensure the federal Family and Medical Leave Act applies to same-sex couples, regardless of where they live in the U.S. President Barack Obama is directing the Labor Department to start drafting rules. The Justice Department also plans to announce it has completed a review assessing what legal benefits can be extended to gay couples.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The fight against the secretive National Security Agency collecting massive amounts of data picked up a surprise win in the House. Libertarians and liberals combined to push through new curbs on government spying as an amendment to a $570 billion defense spending bill. The provision faces an uncertain fate in the Senate. It would bar warrantless collection of personal online information and prohibit access for the NSA and CIA into commercial tech products.
DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) —Syria's state-run news agency and an opposition activist group are reporting a deadly car bombing in a government-held village in central Syria. SANA says at least 34 civilians were killed while the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the toll is at least 37 and expected to rise. Dozens were wounded.
VIENNA (AP) — Diplomats familiar with the negotiations say Iran and six world powers have managed to narrow some differences that stand in the way of reaching a nuclear deal by a July 20 target date. But they report little progress on the main dispute, with Iran resisting U.S.-led attempts to place strict constraints on its uranium enrichment program. Enriched uranium can be used for reactor fuel or weapons.
GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) — The Jefferson County Sheriff's office says Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheater has been shut down after shooting broke out in the parking lot following the end of a concert. Authorities say three people were wounded. The office says all cars leaving the facility are getting a search. No arrests have been made.
