SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities say a small plane that was missing out of Colorado crashed into a steep ravine in Utah, killing the pilot. The San Juan County Sheriff's Office says deputies found the plane yesterday afternoon in the La Sal Mountains in southeastern Utah. Officials say the pilot, 62-year-old Miles Reece of Bayfield, Colorado, was killed on impact.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah is planning to set up new private laboratory space to speed a backlog in evidence related to rape. Advocates say 2,000 rape kits remain unanalyzed in police storage in Utah, putting off prosecutions indefinitely and denying justice for victims. Lab director Jay Henry says the state will soon ask for proposals and select a firm by year's end.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — After the state public records panel ordered Bluffdale to release documents related to the National Security Agency's data center, the city has decided to cut the panel out of its public records appeals process. Open government advocates argue the move makes it less likely that records will be released during disputes. The Salt Lake Tribune reports the council will instead consider the appeals.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — "Modern Family" actor Ty Burrell says gay marriage in the United States is a "tide that can't be turned." Burrell headlined a fundraiser in Salt Lake City last year to help cover legal costs for couples fighting Utah's ban on same-sex marriage. He lent his celebrity to help a group backed by co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
