The safety lapse occurred when a high level biosecurity lab that was preparing anthrax samples used a procedure that did not completely inactivate the bacteria. CDC officials say the risk of infection seems very low, but they're taking precautions.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says he's sending 300 U.S. military advisers to Iraq, where the Baghdad government is fighting off a militant Sunni insurgency. The military advisers will join up to 275 U.S. forces that Obama had previously announced would provide security and support for the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and other American interests.
DETROIT (AP) — The top legislative body of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) voted by large margins today to recognize same-sex marriage as Christian in the church constitution. During a meeting in Detroit, the Presbyterian General Assembly added language that marriage can be the union of "two people" instead of only "a man and a woman." The amendment requires approval from a majority of the 172 regional presbyteries, which will vote on the change over the next year.
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York is set to become the 23rd state to legalize medical marijuana under an agreement announced by legislative leaders. The so-called Compassionate Care Act would legalize certain forms of marijuana for severely ill patients. The legislation would not allow the drug to be sold in plant form or smoked, but it could be administered through a vaporizer or in an oil-base.
