MALVERN, Iowa (AP) — Officials will close an elementary school in the southwest Iowa city of Malvern, but the school could reopen in the future as the district considers options for consolidating classes at one site.
The Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil reports (http://bit.ly/1nlCkP3 ) the East Mills Community School District school board decided Tuesday to close Chantry Elementary School in Malvern due to declining enrollment and budget problems. By holding all elementary classes at Nishna Valley Elementary in nearby Hastings, officials say the district could save money through reduced staff, utility and transportation costs.
In July, the board will decide whether to place a levy on the ballot to pay for building renovations.
If voters support a levy, the district could decide to consolidate operations at one site. That could prompt the reopening of Chantry.
