LAS VEGAS (AP) — Two children died and their parents were hospitalized after an overnight fire gutted a bedroom at a home in northwest Las Vegas, authorities said Thursday.
Police officers who were first to arrive to the report of a fire about 1:10 a.m. were turned back by flames when they tried to enter the single-story home on North Riley Street, near Durango Drive and Ann Road, Deputy Clark County Fire Chief Jon Klassen said.
The parents tried to fight the fire with a garden hose from outside a window until firefighters arrived and were able to reach the 4-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl in the bedroom, Klassen said. Their names weren't immediately made public.
Las Vegas police Capt. Csaba Maczala told KVVU-TV Fox 5 (http://bit.ly/TaDswZ ) that first responders who tried to rescue the children were shaken by the deaths.
"It's very difficult," Maczala said. "It pulls on your heart strings. And they wish they could have done more to save some lives."
Klassen said Clark County fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire, but officials said it appeared to have been accidental.
