JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — North Mississippi banker Simon Weir has resigned from the state Board of Education, effective immediately.

In his resignation letter, Weir says professional commitments have required more of his time, and he was unable to continue to serve on the board.

In 2012, Gov. Phil Bryant appointed to the board that oversees policy for the Mississippi Department of Education. Bryant will appointment a replacement.

Weir, a native of Hernando, is CEO and President of Community Bank, North Mississippi. Weir has worked in the banking industry for more than 20 years.
