BAGHDAD (AP) — President Barack Obama has briefed leaders of Congress on U.S. options for quelling the Sunni insurgency in Iraq lead by the extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. In an offensive launched last week, it has seized terrorist and cities including Mosul, Iraq's second largest city. Officials say the president has not ruled out the possibility of launching airstrikes.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Some lawmakers say the unraveling of Iraq makes them concerned about what will happen in Afghanistan when U.S. forces leave by the end of 2016. Critics of the president are concerned there will be a resurgence of the Taliban. The Afghanistan war has lasted more than a decade, cost billions of dollars and killed more than 2,100 members of the U.S. military.
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans will vote today on leadership changes in the wake of the stunning defeat of Majority Leader Eric Cantor in Virginia's GOP primary. Rep. Kevin McCarthy seems likely to inherit defeated Cantor's No. 2 House Republican leadership job. But there is turmoil along ideological and regional lines in a wide-open race for the party's next-ranking post of majority whip.
WESSINGTON SPRINGS, S.D. (AP) — Amazingly, there is just one injury reported after a tornado went through Wessington Springs, South Dakota, on Wednesday night. Homes were damaged and several businesses destroyed. Town officials say residents rushed to the emergency shelter beneath a courthouse after tornado warnings were sounded.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has ruled that the Washington Redskins' name is "disparaging of Native Americans" and should be stripped of trademark protection. The team says it will appeal the ruling and repeated owner Dan Snyder's pledge not to change the name despite criticism of political, religions and sports figures.
