STARKE, Fla. (AP) — Florida has put to death a man who fatally stabbed his wife and her young son in 1985. It's the third U.S. execution in less than 24 hours. The governor's office says 63-year-old John Henry received a lethal injection tonight. Earlier, the U.S. Supreme Court turned down a last-second appeal. Just before Henry was executed, he apologized and asked for forgiveness.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is considering what steps he could take to try and quell the Islamist insurgency sweeping through Iraq. Obama met with congressional leaders for over an hour today at the White House where they discussed the options. The Senate's top Republican and Capitol Hill aides say Obama doesn't need authorization from Congress for some steps.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Federal safety officials are in Alabama to investigate a fatal plane crash at the Huntsville International Airport. Authorities say three people were killed today when the Westwind II veered off the runway during takeoff and caught fire. Officials are unsure of the plane's intended destination. The passenger's identities haven't been released.

TENINO, Wash. (AP) — An investigation is underway into a deadly explosion this morning at a fireworks plant in Washington state. A spokesman for the Thurston County sheriff's office says a 74-year-old man died while awaiting an airlift to a regional trauma center. Two others were hurt in the explosion at Entertainment Fireworks. Authorities say the blast appears to have been accidental.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The Spanish weren't favored to repeat as World Cup champions this year but few expected the utter collapse that ended today with a 2-0 loss to Chile. The defeat knocked Spain from contention and ended the run of the greatest team of the century. Spain was beaten by the Netherlands 5-1 on Friday.
