SAN DIEGO (AP) — Baseball Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn is dead at the age of 54. The eight-time National League batting champ and 15-time All-Star blamed chewing tobacco as the cause of the cancer which took his life. Gwynn, who spent his entire career with the San Diego Padres, was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2007.
NATAL, Brazil (AP) — The U.S. entry at the World Cup starts play later today. The American squad is squaring off with the team from Ghana, the nation which knocked the U.S. out of the last two World Cups. Earlier in the day Germany blanked Portugal 4-0 as Thomas Mueller had three goals.
DETROIT (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have won seven straight games and tonight they open up a four-game series against the Tigers in Detroit. In the American League Central Division race, the Royals trail the Tigers by just 1 ½ games. Detroit, which has been stumbling of late, has won just five of its last 10 games.
MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Marlins have signed right-hander Tyler Kolek, the second overall pick in the baseball draft. Overall the Marlins have signed 19 of their 42 draft picks, including their first five.
BERLIN (AP) — There's good news regarding seven-time World Driving champion Michael Schumacher. The German, who suffered serious head injuries in a skiing accident last December, has been released from a French hospital and is out of his medically induced coma. The Formula One great now faces a long stint in rehabilitation.
